ICP MONITORING FOR THE LAYPERSON


Many people will take a vacation with one thing in mind, having a wonderful
vacation and nothing else. But how does a vacation becomes a nightmare?

The scenario above indicates that something has gone wrong and a skiing trip
ends in an ICU , with ICP monitoring in place.

ICP ( Intracranial Pressure Monitoring ) is done for a patient who has an injury
to the brain. If the brain is injured like above, swelling occurs. 

What is ICP Monitoring?
This is a simple explanation for the layperson who goes in to the ICU to visit
a sick loved one and see a scenario like the one above. The brain can only
contain a limited amount of swelling. So, in order to avoid further damage,
a drainage system is put in place and the pressures are also measured to
prevent further damage.

WHY IS ICP MONITORING DONE FOR THE LAYPERSON

You may not be a medical person, but may have to live through a family member or friend being cared for in the ICU. There  are some simple facts that might help. What if you walked in to the ICU to find a family member connected to equipment such as ICP monitoring? Scary! What does ICP mean and why is it done? ICP means Intracranial Pressure Monitoring. This refers to a method of monitoring pressures inside the brain. If someone has sustained a brain injury like hemorrhagic stroke, car or skiing accident, a blow to the head after falling and more, ICP Monitoring may be done. An EVD ( external ventricular device) is inserted by the doctor, to relieve swelling in the brain and measure the pressures.
