UNDERSTANDING DEHYDRATION FOR THE LAYPERSON

This topic is intended to simplify dehydration for the layperson.
Dehydration is a word which is often used by medical and laypersons.
Do we really understand how this occurs?

Most people do not pay attention to dehydration and its effect on the
body, until it becomes an obvious problem. Firefighters are among those
who are aware of dehydration. They take measures prior to fighting a fire,
         to prevent it from happening.

Here is an example of how dehydration occurs.
Nick and Tina decide to go backpacking. ( in the image above ) in a desert
place. It is unclear why they did not make adequate preparation and take enough
fluids.

It is midday and they are lost. They are now beginning to feel thirsty, tired and light-
headed. These are some of the symptoms of dehydration. Sweating which may also
cause fluid loss, may go unnoticed. Electrolyte imbalances may also be caused by
fluid loss.
Helpful hint: Always remember to take adequate fluids like sports drinks and water.
Be aware of your surroundings , to prevent getting lost. Dress appropriately!
