UNDERSTANDING PARALYTIC ILEUS FOR THE LAYPERSON

 



In the image above, Alice had abdominal
surgery 3 days ago. She calls the nurse and complains
of abdominal pain. The nurse checks her abdomen and
notices she has no audible bowel sounds. 

This condition is known as a paralytic ileus.

What is Paralytic Ileus?

A paralytic ileus is a complication which may happen
after surgery. This may occur in any surgical patient
and is caused by anesthetics used during surgery.

What are some of the symptoms of this condition?
Absent bowel sounds, abdominal pain and distention.

The nurse will notify the doctor, who will determine
the type of tests and treatment to be done.
