INSULIN AND DIABETIC FACTS FOR THE LAYPERSON

Image
There are many people who are diagnosed with diabetes and  do not fully understand what is happening to their bodies. This simple explanation is designed to help the layperson understand the process of this illness. What is diabetes mellitus? Diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition which may be further complicated by other conditions if not correctly managed. Insulin is secreted by special cells in the pancreas. Insulin works to control the amount of glucose (sugars) that we consume. Both sugars and starches like bread and cakes are broken down during digestion to glucose. If the pancreas cannot  produce insulin for whatever reason, blood glucose becomes high and requires treatment. Medical attention is needed to manage the problem . Depending on the type of diabetes (1 or 2) , the person will require medical management and teaching for the diabetes.

ICP MONITORING FOR THE LAYPERSON

Image
Many people will take a vacation with one thing in mind, having a wonderful vacation and nothing else. But how does a vacation becomes a nightmare? The scenario above indicates that something has gone wrong and a skiing trip ends in an ICU , with ICP monitoring in place. ICP ( Intracranial Pressure Monitoring ) is done for a patient who has an injury to the brain. If the brain is injured like above, swelling occurs.  What is ICP Monitoring? This is a simple explanation for the layperson who goes in to the ICU to visit a sick loved one and see a scenario like the one above. The brain can only contain a limited amount of swelling. So, in order to avoid further damage, a drainage system is put in place and the pressures are also measured to prevent further damage. Medical management will also include adequate rest and medications per doctor's orders. For additional information, please click on the link: ICP Monitoring

We ( the  general public) book a flight to a destination.  We make arrangements to get to the airport and as  expected, we see airplanes arriving and departing .   So, what next?  We check in and wait in the departure lounge. Finally it is time to board the flight. We then get comfortable and pay attention to the air hostesses' flight instructions. Have a good flight!

THE AIRPLANE AND ITS HISTORY

Image
We fly around the world, from city to city or from state to state.     We sit in an airplane and we do normal things like eat , drink and sleep.  But, have we ever stopped to think where it all began.                               Who invented the airplane?                                                                         In a nutshell, the Wright brothers Wilbur and Orville are said                                to have masterminded this flying machine. Apparently, their                                first attempt did not go well. But, no longer is that the case.
